September 15, 2017 By Same DiNamics Crochet 2 Comments

Autumn Sky Hat

This Autumn Sky Hat Free Crochet Pattern is meant to complement the Autumn Sky Cowl. You will find the stitch used is the same throughout both pieces allowing you to coordinate your casual and stylish outfit. The Autumn Sky Hat uses the same Lion Brand Mandala yarn as the cowl. Making it a lightweight hat for you to have for the Fall.

This Autumn Sky Hat will complement your Autumn Sky Cowl perfectly! Made with the same stitch design and yarn, it lends itself wonderfully to your casual style.

Materials

  • Yarn – Lion Brand Yarns Mandala in Chimera, #3 lightweight, 260 (320) yards, 100% acrylic.
  • Hook – G/4mm hook for band of hat; H/5mm hook for body of hat
  • Notions – needle for weaving in ends; pom pom maker (optional); stitch markers

Size

  • S/M – 19” – 21”
  • L/XL – 22” – 24”

Gauge
8 sts = 2”; 8 rows = 2” (Using Kernel sts and 5mm hook)

Pattern for Gauge
Chain 15
Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd chain from hook, 1 Kernel st in the next 12 sts, 1sc in the last st, turn.
Row 2: Ch1, 1 sc in same st, 1 Kernel st in the next 12 sts, 1 sc in the last st, turn.
Rows 3 – 16: repeat row 2.

Stitch Abbreviation
Ch(s) – Chain(s); st(s) – stitches; sp – space; sk – skip; ea – each; sl st – slip stitch; BLO – back loop only; sc – single crochet; dc – double crochet; sc2tog – single crochet 2 together (decrease st)

Special Stitches
Kernel Stitch: *Insert hook into the same st just worked (previous st), pull up yarn (two loops on hook), insert hook into the next st, pull up yarn (three loops on hook), yo and pull through 3 loops on hook*. One Kernel st made. Repeat from * to * to create another Kernel st. See pictures at the bottom.

V-st: (dc, ch1, dc) in the same st/sp.

Experience Level
Easy to Intermediate

Pattern Notes

  • Pattern is written in S/M. Changes for the L/XL are in parentheses, please take note.
  • Ch1 does not equal a st. Join with a sl st to the first st of the round, skipping over the ch1.
  • Ch4 equals a dc plus ch1 – the beginning of your first V-st.
  • When crocheting the slip stitch rows in the band, crochet loosely so that you can easily slide your hook into the BLO of the slip stitch.
  • Use stitch markers to help you identify the first sl st of the sl st row in the band.
  • When working the band, it will look slightly askew, this is normal and it’s due to the use of slip stitches.
  • I give instructions on seaming the band together but use what you feel most comfortable with when it comes to seaming. Important to note that you will NOT be cutting the yarn.
  • Play close attention to decrease rows in the body of the hat. You will be decreasing every few rows.

Pattern Instructions
Band of Hat – All Sizes

Chain 11

Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd st from hook, and in ea st across, turn <10 sc>

Row 2: Ch1, 1 sl st through both loops in the same st, 1 sl st in the BLO of the next 8 sts, 1 sl st through both loops in the last st, turn. <10 sl st>

Row 3: Ch1, 1 sc through both loops in the same st, 1 sc in the BLO of the next 8 sts, 1 sc through both loops in the last st, turn. <10 sc>

Rows 4 – 113 (4 – 123): Repeat rows 2 and 3.

DO NOT CUT YOUR YARN
Bring both ends of the band together with the wrong side facing you, the ridged side of the band should be inside now and the beginning tail should be on your right where your hook is. You will now seam your ends together. I seamed by placing a sl st in ea st across. You should have 10 sl sts.
