Cowl Collar Finish Options

You will now be working in rounds BUT you will be turning after you join to begin each new round. We are now working on the collar of the cowl. You will have two options to finish your collar: a regular tall cowl, or a split collar cowl <-shown in sample

Option 1 – Regular, tall cowl finish:

You will also be alternating colors every two rows.

Rounds 50-51: In CA, Ch2, turn, 1 Hhdc in ea st around, join. <76 Hhdc>

Rounds 52-53: In CB, Ch2, turn, 1 Hhdc in ea st around, join. <76 Hhdc>

Rounds 55-69: Repeat rounds 50-53, maintaining the alternating between CA and CB.

*Note: if you want your cowl to be shorter or taller, continue repeating Rounds 50-53 until you’ve reached the desired height. Once you’ve reached the desired height, move on to finishing round (Round 70).

Round 70: In CA, ch1, 1sc in the same st and in ea st around, join. <76 sc>

Fasten off. Move on to Bandana Cowl Edging and Finishing.

Option 2 – Split Cowl Finish:

You will also be alternating colors every two rows.

Rounds 50-51: In CA, Ch2, turn, 1 Hhdc in ea st around, join. <76 Hhdc>

Rounds 52-53: In CB, Ch2, turn, 1 Hhdc in ea st around, join. <76 Hhdc>

Rounds 55-59: Repeat rounds 50-53, alternating between CA and CB. Round 59 should end in CA. Fasten off.

You’ll now be working in Rows.

From join, and where you fastened off, count 38 sts (be sure to include the st where you joined, – this is the ch2 and counts as a st). Mark the 38th st and the 39th st -you basically are marking the center of the collar so that you can start your split cowl.

With the back of the cowl facing you, join CB (on the WS) with a sl st to the first marked st (38th st).

Row 60: Ch2, 1 Hhdc in ea st around to the second marked st (39th st), turn. <76 Hhdc>

Row 61:  Ch2, 1 Hhdc in ea st across, turn. <76 Hhdc>

Row 62-63: In CA, ch2, 1 Hhdc in ea st across, turn. <76 Hhdc>

Rounds 64-73: Repeat rounds 60 – 63, alternating between CA and CB. Round 73 should end in CB. <76 Hhdc>

Round 74: In CA, Ch1, 1 sc in the same st and in the next 75 sts <76 sc>. Now, working down the side, place 1 sc in the last st worked (this will be 2 sc in the corner st), place 2 sc in ea side st <29 sc>.

Round 75: Ch1, 1 sc in the same st and in ea st up the same side and then across to the end of the top row <105 sc>. Now, working down the side, place 1 sc in the last st worked (this will be 2 sc in the corner st), place 2 sc in ea side st, turn. <29 sc>.

Move on to finishing options below.

Option 1 – Simple sc border

*Note, this row will only be worked up the side and then fastened off. *

Row 76: Ch1, 1 sc in the same st and in the next 27 sts, sl st in the next st. <29 sts> Fasten off.

Option 2 – Buttonholes for buttons

Row 76: Ch1, 1 sc in the same st and in the next, *ch4, sk4 sts, 1 sc in the next 3sts* repeat from * to * 2 more times, ch4, sk4 sts, 1 sc in the next st, sl st in the next st. Fasten off.

Bandana Cowl Edging and Finishing

Edging around the body of the bandana – we will create the base of the edge in CA, then for the rest of the edging, we will switch to CB.

Round 1: In CA, attach yarn, with a sl st, to the center stitch of the back of the bandana cowl where you joined it for the cowl collar, Ch1, 1 sc in the same sp, you will now sc around the bandana placing one or two sc in ea side st, when you get to the center corner, place 2sc in the center corner. Be sure to have 166 sc when you have finished. I placed approximately 2 sc in ea Hhdc side st, and 1 sc in ea sc and sl st side sts. Join CB with a sl st to the first sc in this round. You can now cut CA as we won’t need it anymore.

Round 2: In CB, ch3, dc2tog (ch3 + dc2tog counts as a dc3tog) over the next 2sts, [ch3, dc3tog] 26x, at the corner, ch5, sk2 sts, and dc3tog over the next 3 sts, [ch3, dc3tog] 26x, ch3, join to the top of the dc2tog. <54 dc3tog, 53 ch3 sps, 1 ch-5 sp>

Round 3: Sl st to ch3 sp, [2sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1 hdc, 2sc] in ea ch-3 sp, 26x, [2sc, 2hdc, 1dc, 2hdc, 2sc] in the ch-5 sp, [2sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1 hdc, 2sc] in ea ch-3 sp, 27x, join to the top of the first sc. Fasten off.

And that’s it! Your Blues and Brass Bandana Cowl is finished! I didn’t block my cowl. I just wore it when it was finished.  I hope you’ve enjoyed making this cowl. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me! Thanks!

As always, much love and happy hooking!
