- Yarn – scraps of different yarn in any colors you want to use. I used fall oriented colors
- Pompom maker – I used Clover Pompoms (Amazon affiliate link).
- Small branch/stick
Your finished size will vary.
Not necessary for this project
No stitches used
- Be very creative with your yarn and colors used.
First gather all of the yarn you’d like to use. Eight different yarn colors is sufficient but you can use any amount you’d like. Your colors can be eclectic and in colors that contrast but go well together. Your colors can also be gradient in nature with varying tones of a single color. I chose to make my front door decorations in colors that represent Fall.
Make your pompoms as big or small as you’d like. I used two different sizes of the Clover pompom maker. If you don’t have a clover pompom maker, you can wrap the yarn around 4 fingers of your hand (left hand if your right handed; right hand if your left handed). Once you’ve achieved a desired thickness for your pompom, carefully remove the yarn keeping the loops intact. Take a long string and tie it in the middle of your loops with a knot so that it doesn’t untie. The long string will serve as string to tie the pompom to your branch/stick. You can now cut the loops to create your pompom. Fluff your pompom ball.
Here are some video tutorials on how to make pompoms using a pompom maker and without a pompom maker:

Once all of your pompoms have been made, you can tie them to your branch in staggered lengths, or the same length. How you build your very own front door hanger is up to you.
Lay your branch/stick down on a flat surface, the floor or table is good, and place your pompoms on the branch (but don’t tie) by its long string. Space them out evenly and in the length you’d like. Once you have an idea of how you’d like your pompoms to be placed on the branch/stick, you can now begin the tying process. Tie your pompoms to the branch securely with a knot.
Now that you have the pompoms attached to the branch/stick you need to be able to hang your decoration. Take a long piece of yarn, about 1.5′ – 2′ long and attach with a knot to each end of the branch. Having a long piece of yarn gives you room to play with how high or low you’d like to hang your decoration to the door. The shorter the yarn, the higher your decoration will hang; the longer the yarn, the lower your decoration will hang. What I did, was tie a knot in the middle and left some yarn hanging, giving me room to play with height. All that was left was for me to hang my new Pompom Front Door Decoration.
Voila! That’s it, you have made your very own, inexpensive Fall front door decoration. The best thing is that this works up very quick. The assembly only takes minutes and the hanging on your front door, just mere seconds. If you make one, share your pics with me. I’d love to see your own Pompom Front Door Decoration.
As always, much love and happy hooking!
