How to Crochet a Dishcloth and Washcloth

ย Sea Blossoms Dish and Washcloth Free Crochet Pattern

When I made the Coral Blossom Face Scrubbies, I knew I wanted to crochet a dishcloth or washcloth because they are just so much fun to make! While browsing the internet, I saw a stitch that intrigued me and knew I needed to use it in a pattern. Since dishcloths and washcloths could use some texture, the stitch I saw was perfect. The stitch resembled a puff stitch but made on the post of a double crochet (DC) stitch and not in a stitch of the previous row. I looked up different variations of the stitch and came across the Side Puff Stitch. The Side Puff Stitch adds some subtle texture to the design along with the texture of the yarn.

When I designed the Sea Blossom Dish and Washcloth, the form of the cloth made itself. The cloth started curling due to how I used the Side Puff Stitch, and I loved that! That was such a sweet surprise with how the final design resulted. The Sea Blossom Dish and Washcloth are made using 100% cotton in some really beautiful colors that just remind me of the colors of the sea with the green and blue hues of the sea, along with the subtle orange colors of the sand. The curled edges also resemble sea fans that are found on coral reefs that border islands and land masses. It’s so beautiful! See, I grew up on St. Croix and saw these beautiful coral reefs and the abundant aquatic life that live on the reefs, including sea fans and sea brain coral (which, quite frankly, when the Sea Blossom Dish and Washcloths are bunched up, they look like sea brain coral!)

When playing around with the design after I was finished with it, I also found that I can use these as towels to hold hot bowls or plates that just came out of the oven! The size of them perfectly hugged my bowl. I mean, you can use these for anything you want, not just for washing. Honestly, I think they’re too pretty to be used for washing but that was their original intention. The choice is yours, however, on how you want to use these!

Pattern Notes

  • Ch1 does not equal a stitch; join to the top of the sc or hdc.
  • Ch2 does not equal a stitch; join to the top of the ch2.
  • On the Side Puff Sts, you will count ea โ€˜stโ€™ at the top of the Side Puff Sts
  • I started from the center pull of the ball and cut the textured yarn off to start off with the cotton yarn.
  • When getting to the last row of slip stitching, you may need to add the cut off bit to finish off the round. You can completely skip this last row IF you run out of yarn and donโ€™t want to add yarn.
