**I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I was not compensated for my review**
When I had the opportunity to read The Secret Stitch: Unraveling, Book One I immediately jumped at the opportunity. For two reasons: I’m a lover of books and love reading daily; and two, I love to crochet. For these very reasons, I knew I needed to read this book. And let me tell you, what wonderful read it was.
The Secret Stitch focuses on the journey of a young woman traveling from her home country of Ireland, after a scandal plagues her, to her new home of the New World with a husband in tow. Ailee has been plunged into this journey but takes the reigns and doesn’t let the journey dictate her path. During this journey, Ailee continues practicing her knitting to no avail. She ends up with useless pieces that frustrates her to no end.
This story spans time and follows Ailee from the moment she sets foot on the ship that will carry her across the vast Atlantic Ocean to the New World. She endures heartache, fear, sickness, and tumultuous storms that threaten the livelihood of all aboard. Ailee also forms strong friendships with fellow passengers as well as crew members. During one these friendships, she comes across an interesting and unique cowl whose owner claims to have magical and protective properties. The cowl was given to him by a German man whom he met on one his previous sea voyages. This German man claims that the cowl has saved him from foe in the past.
Upon arriving to the New World, Ailee begins settling into a new routine while learning how to care for a home during those times. All the while, Ailee cannot forget that magical cowl with its interesting stitches that is anything unlike knitting. Until one day, she meets someone who is able to teach her what this magical cowl is all about, The Secret Stitch.
This story is more than just about a cowl, it’s a story about survival, courage, and believing enough in yourself to overcome scandals and tragedies. There’s something truly magical about crochet that leaves the soul at peace and joyful.
Do I recommend this book? I truly do. I could not put the book down when I started reading it. It’s one of those rare books that just captures your attention. It will make you cry and leave you feeling happy and fulfilled in the end. It truly is worth picking up.
