Okay, so first, let me say that I bought my yarnDispenser with part of my winning of the Judges’ Choice in Round 12 of Battle of the Stitches (you can see here my winning design). After using my yarn dispenser for a few months after, I approached its maker Yarn Valet to see if they would sponsor a giveaway because I wanted to do a review and share the awesome goodness of this product, and they agreed! So good news for you!
Also, follow them on social media! Instagram, @yarnvalet, and Facebook are great ways to learn more about their products.

I have always wanted a yarn dispenser after seeing some gorgeous ones in local yarn stores, but, they were a bit out of my price range, so I went on a search for an alternative one. Let me tell you, I found it!
See, the yarnDispenser from Yarn Valet is perfect for me. It really is. I do all my crocheting in my living, and I have 3 boys. It’s a busy, lived-in living room. At any moment in time, my crochet stuff could be knocked into. The yarnDispenser is made out of sturdy, lightweight plastic, so if it takes a tumble on the floor, it won’t break. Another reason why it’s perfect, the price was perfect! At only $14.99 (as of 4/25/2017, this price could change and I have no control over that), I knew I had to have it. I had looked up some reviews on it and what I found was positive reviews.
The yarnDispenser came in a box and in two pieces, the base, and the yarn holder. The yarn holder slides unto the base and it fits perfectly. The base has a small gauge ruler, if you need it, and has little holes in the back for you to store things. I’ve not used the gauge ruler nor the holes, those are just extra features that work well in a pinch.
Because of the sturdy yet lightweight plastic it’s made of, the yarn dispenser is great for traveling. I’ve taken it in the car with me before. Actually, I’ve just taken the part that holds the yarn as it works great just like that. Also, the bottom of the base has rubber feet that keeps it from sliding off your work surface. And as I mentioned above, if it falls off the table because it was knocked over, it won’t break. It hasn’t for me and it’s taken a few tumbles due to my fault or one of my boys knocking it over.
As far as how much yarn it holds, I’ve used a full cake of Caron Cakes Yarn (affiliate link) and Premier Sweet Roll Yarn (affiliate link) with it, and it’s worked really well. I do have to say that in the beginning, because it is heavy, the twirling action as you crochet is not so easily achieved. Once the yarn gets used up a bit and it gets lighter all you have to do is just crochet and the yarn will twirl or dispense itself.
Now, after saying that, I have found that I actually prefer to pull out some yarn, let it hang, and crochet. The twirling action is great for tension as well as it does keep your yarn taut. Now, I do believe that how you use the dispenser will be relative to its user. I prefer letting mine hang instead of letting it twirl for taut and tension. For me it just flows easier.
I have also used a yarn cake that I made myself from a luscious yarn I bought from a wonderful local yarn dyer. The center hole created from my yarn winder is the perfect size for allowing me to put the yarn cake unto the dispenser. I have also used a regular skein that you buy at the store and instead of using the center pull, I’ve used the outside pull of the skein. Using a skein is a bit more cumbersome than using a cake as due to how a skein is made, and how tall it is, it doesn’t twirl as easy. But, because I prefer to pull my yarn out first, it worked well for me. My skein was not rolling all over the place (now I’ve got that Tina Turner song Rolling on the River – link to video just for fun – in my head) and I would pull out the yarn as I needed it. If you’re looking for a twirling action with a skein, you might not get it.
Now, do I recommend the Yarn Valet yarnDispenser? You bet I do! It’s reasonably priced, it’s sturdy yet lightweight, and it can fit yarn cakes and skeins. It’s truly a great product that will suit your needs.
Winner update: I had to choose a new winner due to no response from the first.
As always, much love and happy hooking!
